Whether a CDL is required to drive an RV is a question that no one can answer definitively. The type of RV you own and the state in which you live will determine what RV license you need. Here are a few examples of how a CDL or special license could be used to comply with the law.

- R Registration: Except for New York, this type of license is not required anywhere else. Recreational vehicles weighing more than 26,000 pounds are required to have this license in the Empire State. Determine if this license is required in your state by contacting the DMV.
- Commercial: Certificates of driver licenses are not necessarily required to operate RVs; however, it is best to verify this information with your local DMV. You won’t have to get this license if you rent an RV from Cruise America!
- No comercial: Some states require certain kinds of licenses for noncommercial activities. Class B licenses, for example, are required to operate certain recreational vehicles in California. Your RV license should be valid before you begin your road trip to California.

Let’s start with the type of RV that Cruise America offers: the C-Class motorhome! A Cruise America Class C RV is the best choice for road trips with the family because it is easy to drive and operate. RVs with overhead cabins are best known for being able to fit part of the RV directly over the driver’s seat. There is no special license required to rent a Class C motorhome or camper van with Cruise America. In addition to having a valid driver’s license and credit card, you simply need to be 21 years old or older. Since it’s easier to operate, lighter, and shorter, this is the case.
