Taking care of an RV generator includes all the different things you need to do and how often you need to do them.
1. Generator inspection:
An RV generator visual inspection is one of the most simple things you can do to maintain it. Every time you exercise your RV generator, you should perform a visual inspection. It is important to ensure that your RV generator is clean, dry, and free of obvious problems. A leak, corrosion, crack, or other sign of a more serious problem should be watched for.
2. RV Generator Oil Check:
The oil should be changed and the oil filter should be inspected when you service your RV generator. The oil level can be checked using a dipstick on your RV generator, just like your engine. Fill the RV generator with the same oil you currently have when the level of oil is low. There should always be a recommendation for the type of oil in your owner’s manual.
3. RV Generator Battery Connection Test:
Batteries built into RV generators should be checked for connections. It is important to inspect the battery terminals during this time to ensure there are no corrosion issues, exposed wiring, or other problems. Every month, in addition to your RV maintenance checklist, you should perform a visual inspection.
4. Recreational Vehicle Generator Fuel Filters:
It is recommended that you change your RV generator’s fuel filter every 500 hours of operation. You can find information about the location of your fuel filter in your owner’s manual. There are sometimes two fuel filters on RV generators. It is also not recommended to use Teflon plumbing tape. This type of filter has a good seal by itself.
5. Air Filters for RV Generators:
Dirty and dusty environments may require you to replace your RV generator’s air filters more often. The performance of your RV generator will be drastically reduced if you do not replace your dirty air filter. The air filter can be removed after it has been replaced, so that dirt and debris can be removed. You will be able to improve the performance of your RV generator by doing this.
6. Replacement of spark plugs:
The spark plugs in your RV generator should be replaced every 450 hours. Your RV generator is powered by the spark produced by spark plugs. Failure of these components will result in the generator not working. Depending on the model of your generator, you may need a different number of spark plugs. Generators powered by gas are the only ones that fall into this category. Diesel generators do not require spark plug replacement.
7. RV Generator Storage:
Generators often go with RVs when they are stored. Setting up and storing your generator follows the same rules as setting up and storing your RV. The following steps should be followed in order to properly store RV generators:
- Thoroughly inspect the facilities
- Maintain a healthy level of oil
- Ensure that dirt and debris are removed
- Spark plugs and filters need to be replaced if necessary
Drain or stabilize the fuel once everything is in order. The generators will stop working if they are left with raw fuel. Ethanol is present in some gasoline today. Engine components can rust if they are exposed to moisture in ethanol. You can avoid this problem by running the generator until the fuel tank is empty. A liquid fuel stabilizer can also be added to a full tank and run for a few minutes. Fuel stabilizers protect RV generators from moisture caused by ethanol.
